Sara by the sea
Photographs from our third shoot with Swedish actress Sara Vainio, in the midst of bleak Scanian winter. We had about an hour and a half of overcast light before sunset, in light rain, and tried our best to make the most of it.
It’s a running joke in my family that I actively resist planning for shoots. I don’t quite agree. I don’t resist planning per se, but I’m just not very good at it. Some people have a talent for visualizing the photo they want beforehand, but I’m not like that at all. I consider myself what wedding photographer John Dolan calls a collector, rather than a director. I need to see moments play out before my eyes, rather than in my mind.
I did prepare a little for this shoot and I even made a moodboard, with collected black and white photos of unhappy women by the sea and in cityscapes, not exactly dressed for the elements. It was a nice staring point for us, before the shoot took on a life of its own.
